Your attendance badge

Some courses mark attendance by scanning a QR code. You have one badge, in the Yoshuko app, and your teacher may also hand you a printed copy. Either one marks you present when it is scanned at the door or by your teacher's device.

Before you start

  • You are enrolled in a course whose teacher takes attendance with badges.
  • Nothing here is needed to take the course. If you would rather not, ask your teacher to mark you by hand.

Show your badge in the app

  1. In the app, open Settings and choose Attendance badge.
  2. Hold the QR code up to the scanner. Turn your screen brightness up first — a dim screen is the commonest reason a scan does not work.
  3. The kiosk or your teacher's device shows your name when you are marked present.

If you learn in more than one organisation, each has its own badge; use the buttons above the code to switch.

The code changes every hour. Refreshes in … counts down to the next change and the app fetches the new code by itself, so keep the screen open rather than saving a screenshot — a screenshot stops working within the hour. If you open the app after being away, it fetches a fresh code straight away.

Use your printed badge

Your teacher can print a badge for you. A printed badge does not change: it works every time, in every course your teacher runs, until your teacher replaces it. Keep it like a library card. If you lose it, tell your teacher — they replace it, and the lost one stops working at once.

When a scan does not work

The scanner says What it means What to do
Badge not recognised The code is not one this course knows. Use the badge from your own app, or ask your teacher for a new printed one.
That app code has expired — refresh it in the app The code on your screen is more than a little over an hour old. Pull down on the badge screen, or close and reopen it, then scan again.
That badge has been replaced Your teacher issued you a new badge. Use the new printed badge, or the code in the app.
Not enrolled in this course The badge is valid but you are not on this course's roster. Tell your teacher.
… you are already marked present today You were marked earlier today. Nothing — you are counted once.
… your instructor has marked you absent today Your teacher set today's mark by hand, and a scan never changes it. Speak to your teacher.

If the badge screen shows Couldn't load your attendance badge., check your connection and press Retry. No code is shown rather than an old one.

What is stored

  • A mark that says you were present on that day, and that it came from a badge scan.
  • Your teacher's device is sent a scrambled fingerprint of each valid code, not the codes themselves, so it can recognise a badge without being able to copy one.
  • Nothing from the camera is uploaded or kept. The scanner reads the QR code on the device and sends only the badge code.

Earlier versions of Yoshuko could recognise faces. That is no longer how attendance works in the app: there is nothing to set up, and no photo of you is used to mark attendance.

Remove face data from the earlier version

If face data was stored for you before attendance moved to badges, the Attendance badge screen shows a Face data section. Choose Remove my face data and confirm: it is deleted from every course, and the screen says Your face data has been deleted. Nothing stops working, because attendance now uses your badge. If the section is not there, no face data is stored for you. Deleting your account also deletes it.
